Stollen — A Sweet Christmas Classic

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • ½ cup butter (softened)
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp dry yeast
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup mixed dried fruit (raisins, currants, candied peel)
  • ¼ cup chopped almonds
  • 2 tbsp rum or orange juice (to soak fruit)
  • ½ cup marzipan (optional, for the centre)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Soak dried fruit in rum or orange juice for 30 minutes.
  2. In a bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes.
  3. Add butter, egg, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Mix well.
  4. Add flour and knead until soft and smooth.
  5. Fold in soaked fruit and almonds.
  6. Cover and let rise for 1 hour.
  7. Shape the dough into an oval. Place marzipan in the middle and fold dough over it.
  8. Bake at 175°C (350°F) for 30–35 minutes, until golden.
  9. Brush with melted butter and dust generously with powdered sugar.
