Rustic African Oven-Baked Whole Seabass

Ingredients

  • 1 whole seabass (cleaned and scaled)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp sea salt (to taste)
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp ginger powder
  • ½ tsp crushed chili or cayenne (optional for heat)
  • 1 lemon (half sliced, half for juice)
  • Fresh herbs—parsley or coriander 🌿
  • 1 small onion—thick slices (optional)
  • 1 tbsp African spice mix (optional: suya spice or all-purpose seasoning)

Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat oven to 200°C / 390°F
2️⃣ Pat the fish dry with paper towels
3️⃣ Make 3–4 deep slashes on each side of the fish
4️⃣ Rub with oil, then season with all spices inside and outside.
5️⃣ Stuff cavity with lemon slices + herbs + onion
6️⃣ Place on rustic wooden board or baking tray
7️⃣ Bake 20–25 minutes until skin is crispy
8️⃣ Squeeze fresh lemon before serving. 🍋✨
